Among ‘n’ number of factors responsible for making a big movie Blockbuster, release date plays a very significant part. A big movie, with big stars, chartbuster music and strong content if releases on a festival period prove to be a box office jackpot for everyone involved.
If we just track the recent years, we’ve seen films like 3 Idiots, Ghajini, Dabangg, Krrish 3, Kick, Bajirao Mastani, Sultan, PK, Dhoom 3 and many more released on holiday period and set the box office on fire.
Apart from this, there were films like Ra.One, Singham Returns, Bodyguard, Happy New Year and more which had average public reports but were still saved by the festival period. If it was not the festival period for their rescue, the films must have been Flops.
BUT, despite all the significance these festivals carry in the success of Bollywood films, they don’t guarantee it. As mentioned above, festival dates or period is just one of the important factors to make a film successful and you can’t hope for a Blockbuster if other factors like content are not there.
Here is a list of Bollywood films which flopped at Box Office despite releasing on Festival period. Have a look-
1. Jaan-E-Mann
The 2006 Diwali release Jaan-E-Mann brought two big stars, Akshay Kumar & Salman Khan together. The film clashed with Shah Rukh Khan starrer Don and proved to be a big Flop.
2. Salaam-E-Ishq
Big film Salaam-E-Ishq had a huge star cast with the likes of Salman Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Vidya Balan, John Abraham and more sharing the screen space. The film released on Republic Day period back in 2007 but proved to be a Disaster.
3. Saawariya
The 2007 Diwali release, Saawariya gave a big launch to Ranbir Kapoor & Sonam Kapoor back in 2007. The content of the film was however rejected by the audience.
Further, it clashed with Shah Rukh Khan’s Blockbuster Om Shanti Om and hence proved to be a big Flop.
4. Main Aur Mrs Khanna
Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor & Sohail Khan starrer 2009 Diwali release proved to be a Disaster of epic proportions.
5. Blue
Akshay Kumar’s big-budget Diwali 2009 release was among the much-hyped films of that year. The film opened to good response but couldn’t sustain and hence Flopped badly.
6. Besharam
After the super success of Ye Jawaani Hai Deewani, Ranbir Kapoor was being termed as the next big superstar of Industry. It was his turn to enter the 200 crores club with a complete massy film but he took a “Wrong Turn” as the film Besharam turned out to be arguably his worst film ever.
No doubt the 2013 Gandhi Jayanti release opened to a huge response but fell flat on its face later. It goes without saying that Besharam was one of the biggest disappoints of that year.
7. Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobara
Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai starring Ajay Devgn and Emraan Hashmi was a sleeper hit and highly appreciated film. The sequel starring Akshay Kumar and Imran Khan had bigger expectations and the fact that the film was releasing on Independence Day 2012, it was bound to be a huge success.
However, the film completely failed. Neither it got a good opening, nor it trended well at Box Office. The film was one of the biggest Flops of that year.
8. Brothers
Akshay Kumar & Sidharth Malhotra starrer Brothers released on Independence Day period in 2015. The film was appreciated by its target audience but that audience was too small and the budget was big.
Even though it was a holiday release, the film didn’t make audience turn up to theatres and proved to be a loss maker.
9. Mohenjo Daro
After the success of Jodhaa Akbar, Hrithik Roshan and Ashutosh Gowariker promised to come together with a bigger and better film.
Mohenjo Daro was set on a large scale and took two years to complete. Hrithik didn’t work on any film while he shot for this one. However, all the hard work went in vain as the content was totally rejected by audience.
10. Tubelight
Salman Khan and Kabir Khan gave two Blockbusters Ek Tha Tiger and Bajrangi Bhaijaan together. Their next film Tubelight was expected to do even more.
The film released on Eid this year but the content was not appreciated by the audience. It turned out to be this year’s biggest disappointment.
What do you think? Which is the worst festival release Flop of Bollywood?
