An arranged marriage is not an alien concept in our culture. Indian men and women alike are prepped for this concept since childhood and if you don't find a partner to suit yourself, rest assured your parents will find one for you, regardless. But most people abiding by this culture settle in for an arranged marriage without thinking twice. It could be because they haven't found anyone so they leave the hunt for a partner to their parents, or because their parents are fastidious about finding their children a match on their own. Whatever is it, the concept of an arranged marriage is very transparent in India and seemingly, spending your entire life with a stranger is not a strange phenomenon to many!

But before you embark on your journey with a complete stranger, there are a few things you have to keep in mind. It's true, you never really know someone unless you've lived with them for a considerable amount of time but if you are planning to marry a complete stranger, there are a few things you can keep in mind, before jumping into an arranged marriage. It just makes the process of living with someone you barely know easier.
Here are the 5 most pertinent things to keep in mind, while considering an arranged marriage.
Set A Timeline
Setting a timeline is quiet important, unless of course you're in a rush to get married! Setting a timeline means selecting a partner though a matrimonial site or through an arrangement by your parents and giving the other person considerable amount of time before marriage, so you can get to know each other better. It's only fair if you have no idea about the person! You can spend a lot of quality time together, finding out your likes, dislikes, habits and other important things. If possible, try and live together for a bit. It will definitely tell you a lot about the other person.

Spend Time With Her Family
They say if you marry someone in India, you marry their family too. So, it's quite important to spend adequate amount of time with the family too. If you think you can adjust around them and they treat you well, and you get along fine, it's definitely a green flag. Remember, you will have to deal with her family for the rest of your life too, so make sure you know them as well as you know her.

Financial Compatibility
This is an important aspect in today's day and age and it would have been important enough even if it wasn't an arranged marriage. By financial compatibility, I mean the financial stability should be flexible and compatible between the two of you. It does not mean you should be earning more than her or she should be earning any less. It just means there should be equality in finances and it's a little important that both of you are financially secure and independent. Of course you will be splitting costs after marriage but it's good to figure out what your partner's financial compatibility is, before you get around to doing that.

Lay All Your Cards On The Table
If you're in a relationship with someone before you get married you already know their expectations and what they want from you and what they don't. In an arranged marriage you're as clueless as she is. So it's good to lay all your cards on the table and talk about what you two expect from each other. If she wants to change anything or if you expect anything out of her, it should be discussed before you get married because it helps to map the needs and wants from your partner, for a fuller, successful marriage. For instance if you're planning on going out of the country for work, sometime in the future, she should know about it before hand. Discussing kids, future goals and career options is also a must.

Be Open About Your Past
Since it's an arranged marriage, your partner will not know anything about your past and it's good to be open about it, in case there is something relevant your partner needs to know. You can of course start with a clean slate too, wherein you tell each other the past doesn't matter and you lay it all out on the table. But knowing about each other's past also gives you a peak into the other person's life and you can get to know them a lot better through this exercise. As long as you both aren't masking to be someone else, it's a great way to build any sort of relationship.
